BE – Political issues remain on top of the Belgian media agenda in June 2019 but become less important than during the previous month. Companies and consumers were more visible, while the visibility for security and justice dropped slightly.

NL – Sports are most mediatised in The Netherlands in June 2019 but are becoming again less important than in May. The visibility for population and associations becomes more important, just like for security and justice.

Different trends in the media agenda in Belgium and The Netherlands

BE – During this month of June 2019, the Belgian media emphasise more issues related to Europe and migration, politics and society, culture, companies and consumers and economy than the Dutch media.

NL – On the other hand, during this month of June 2019, issues related to technologies were largely more covered in the Dutch media than in the Belgian media. The same applies for housing, ecology, mobility, security and health and food issues.

BE – In June 2019, the top five issues gaining most media exposure in the Belgian media are 

  1. culture (festival season), 
  2. housing, 
  3. transport and mobility, 
  4. ecology and 
  5. EU, international and migration.

NL – In June 2019, the top five issues gaining most media exposure in the Dutch media are

  1.  sports,
  2.  security and justice,
  3.  transport and mobility,
  4.  ecology

  politics and society. 

NL/BE Comparison – Belgium and the Netherlands share upward trends in culture, transport and mobility, ecology, EU and migration and security and justice issues.

6 themes are different between Belgium and the Netherlands: 

  1.  housing (increasing in the Belgian media, decreasing in the Dutch media), 
  2.  companies and consumers (rising in the Belgian media), 
  3.  education (rising in the Belgian media), 
  4.  economy (decreasing in the Dutch media), 
  5.  sports (rising in the Dutch media) 
  6.  politics and society (decreasing in the Belgian media).

For the top 10 of the most mentioned brands in the Belgian and Dutch media, 5 brands out of 10 are found on both sides of the ranking.

1.Facebook is the first brand in the Belgian and the second brand in the Dutch top 10.


2.Apple is also present in the Belgian and Dutch top 10. The brand is 2nd in the Belgian and 3rd in the Dutch media and is mentioned in articles on the trade war between China and the US.


3.Google is also present in the Belgian (3rd) and Dutch (8th) top 10.


4.Mercedes and Ferrari are also present in the Belgian and Dutch top 10 thanks to the Formula 1. Mercedes is the 6th brand in Belgium and the 5th brand in The Netherlands, while Ferrari is the 9th brand in Belgium and the 6th brand in The Netherlands.


5.In the Dutch media, Bol.com tops the ranking due to articles on the market position of the brand.


6.Renault is only present in the top 10 of the Belgian media that are interested in topics like the possible merger with Fiat Chrysler and the problems with former CEO Carlos Ghosn.
