When we talk about Trending Topic, do you know what we're referring to? These are the most mediatized topics in the Belgian and Dutch press. Below is a media monitoring of the sectors and companies most widely reported in the media during the month of May.
BE – Political issues remain on top of the Belgian media agenda in May 2019 and become much more important due to the national and European elections. Sports are becoming less important, just like companies and consumers.
NL – Sports are most mediatised in The Netherlands in May 2019 but are becoming less important than in April. The visibility for politics and society remains stable. Ecology remains a top trend in the Dutch media with more than 6% of the media interest.
BE – During this month of May 2019, the Belgian media emphasise more issues related to politics and society (elections), Europe and migration, employment, economy, culture and education than the Dutch media.
NL – On the other hand, during this month of May 2019, issues related to technologies were largely more covered in the Dutch media than in the Belgian media. The same applies for housing, ecology, sports, mobility, security and health and food issues.
NL – In May 2019, the top five issues gaining media exposure in the Dutch media are (1) politics and society, (2) EU, international, migration, (3) employment, (4) culture and (5) transport and mobility.
BE – In May 2019, only three issues were gaining media exposure in the Belgian media. These are (1) politics and society, (2) EU, international, migration and (3) security and justice.

7 themes are different between Belgium and the Netherlands: (1) Technologies (increasing in the Belgian media, decreasing in the Dutch media), (2) employment (rising in the Dutch media), (3) culture (rising in the Dutch media), (4) transport (decreasing in the Belgian media), (5) education (rising in the Dutch media), (6) ecology (rising in the Dutch media) and (7) economy (decreasing in the Belgian media).
For the top 10 of the most mentioned brands in the Belgian and Dutch media, 5 brands out of 10 are found on both sides of the ranking.
1.Facebook is the first brand in the Belgian and Dutch top 10.
2.Huawei is also present in the Belgian and Dutch top 10. The brand is 3th in the Belgian and 2nd in the Dutch media and is impacted by the trade war between China and the US.
3.Apple and Google are also present in the Belgian and Dutch top 10. Apple is the 7th brand in Belgium and the 6th brand in The Netherlands, while Google is the 4th brand in Belgium and the 3rd brand in The Netherlands.
4.Car brand Mercedes is also present in both rankings: Mercedes is the 9th brand in the Belgian media and the 4th brand in the Dutch media.
5.In the Dutch media, Bol.com appears in the ranking on the 5th place due to communication on the strong growth of the company.
