BE – Political issues remain most important for the Belgian media agenda. Sports is the second most important theme. The visibility for health and food was slightly increasing during this month.

NL – Politics becomes the most important theme in October 2019, followed by sports. The visibility for health and food was also slightly increasing in The Netherlands.

BE – During this month of October 2019, the Belgian media emphasise more issues related to culture, sports, international and migration issues, political issues and issues related to employment, economy and consumption than the Dutch media.

NL – On the other hand, during this month of October 2019, issues related to associations, health and food, ecology, mobility, security, technology, housing and education are more covered in the Dutch media than in the Belgian media.

NL – In October 2019, the top five issues gaining the most media exposure in the Dutch media are (1) security and justice, (2) media, (3) sports, (4) transport and mobility and (5) companies and consumers.

BE – In October 2019, the top five issues gaining the most media exposure in the Belgian media are (1) population and association, (2) media, (3) health and food, (4) EU and international and (5) economy and finance.

NL/BE Comparison – Belgium and the Netherlands share upward trends for media. 11 themes are different between Belgium and the Netherlands with for example: (1) health and food (increasing in the Belgian media, decreasing in the Dutch media), (2) security and justice (rising in the Dutch media), (3) EU and international (decreasing in the Dutch media), (4) economy, finance (increasing in the Belgian media) and (5) technologies (rising in the Dutch media).

For the top 10 of the most mentioned brands in the Belgian and Dutch media, 4 brands out of 10 are found on both sides of the ranking.

  1. Facebook and Google are both present in the ranking. Facebook is the first brand in the Belgian and Dutch top 10, while Google is the 6th brand in both rankings.
  2. Thomas Cook is also present in both rankings, on the 4th place in the Belgian ranking and the 2nd place in the Dutch ranking. The acquisition of the Thomas Cook stores by Wamos gets a lot of attention in both countries.
  3. Nethys is only present in the Belgian top 10 (2nd): the resignation of the CEO and other topics are still important media issues.
  4. Apple is only present in the Belgian top 10 (3rd ). The arrival of Apple TV+ in Belgium generates several articles in the Belgian media.
  5. Hudson’s Bay remains only present in the Dutch top 10, just like last month (8th ): the Canadian brand leaves The Netherlands and several jobs are lost.
