The trending topics in february 2019

BE – Political issues remain on top of the Belgian media agenda in February 2019, but become again less important than during the previous month. Sports remain very important in the Belgian media. Ecology is becoming a little more important than in January due to protest against climate change.

NL – Sports are most mediatised in The Netherlands in February 2019 and become even more important than in January. Companies and consumers also become more important in February, but also political issues mark the news. Ecology is a top trend in The Netherlands with more than 6% of the media interest.

BE – During this month of February 2019, the Belgian media emphasise more issues related to politics, Europe and migration issues, employment, culture and economical issues than the Dutch media. This is exactly the same trend than in January.

NL – On the other hand, during this month of February 2019, issues related to housing were largely more covered in the Dutch media than in the Belgian media. The same applies for transport and mobility issues, technologies, sports, ecology, education and health and food issues.

NL – In February 2019, the top five issues gaining media exposure in the Dutch media are (1) companies and consumers, (2) politics and society, (3) transport, (4) economy and (5) security and justice.

BE – In February 2019, the top five issues gaining media exposure in the Belgian media are (1) politics and society, (2) security and justice, (3) companies and consumers, (4) economy and (5) Europe, international and migration.

NL/BE Comparison – Belgium and the Netherlands share upward trends in security and justice, companies and consumers, politics and society, economy and Europe and international issues. Only one theme is different between Belgium and the Netherlands: Transport (rising in the Dutch media, decreasing in the Belgian media).

For the top 10 of the most mentioned brands in the Belgian and Dutch media, 2 brands out of 10 are found on both sides of the ranking.

1.YouTube is present in the Belgian and Dutch top 10. The brand is 8th in the Belgian and 7th in the Dutch media. The most important topic was the launch of a YouTube version for children.
2.Apple is also present in the Belgian and Dutch top 10. The brand is 5th in the Belgian and 4th in the Dutch media.
3.In the Belgian media, AB Inbev is very present due to financial results, investments in Hoegaarden and other topics. SNCB is present due to the national strike just like De Lijn.
4.In the Dutch media, Air France – KLM is most present due to investments from the Dutch government and protest from employees. The bankruptcy from Intertoys was also an important topic.
